PROCESS
“Built best to last”
Each project follows a thoughtful process—from early conversations and sketches to the final delivery or installation.
Through careful planning, hand-selected materials, and deliberate craftsmanship, every stage is approached with intention.
The result is work that is well-proportioned, thoughtfully made, and built to last.
1 / CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
We begin with a conversation that leads to simple sketches in order to get particular ideas and needs down.
Often when walking through a project verbally in the ideation process, we can catch details that may inform future iterations.
At this stage there is enough information to prepare a cost estimate and submit a proposal.
2 / SHOP DRAWINGS
In order to know where you are going, we need to know where to start. Success is much more attainable with an accurate model and detailed set of plans.
This process is where a lot of decisions get made around proportions, joinery, and other details like lighting or handle placement.
3 / MATERIAL PROCUREMENT
Upon approval of the drawings and a partial deposit is collected, we carefully hand select the materials needed for your project.
Ask most woodworkers, a trip to the lumberyard doesn’t feel like work most days!
4 / WORK COMMENCES
First we begin by breaking down material to rough dimensioned parts and then transfer layout lines for joinery and end cuts.
While high efficiency is important in processes, some things require more time and thoughtful execution, especially when working with extremely sharp Japanese tools.
5 / ASSEMBLY AND FINISH
After all parts have been cut to size and joined properly, the piece can be put together. Depending on the project, in some instances finish is applied before assembly, and others after.
It is in the character and beauty of the wood where the true form shines; to that extent we aim to only use natural oils and waxes to protect and enhance the lifespan of your piece.
If you are looking for a particular color, patina, or effect, this is communicated in the conceptual design phase.
6 / DELIVERY OR INSTALL
Projects are generally delivered personally if within a reasonable driving distance from our shop, or we would be glad to arrange freight shipping around the world if your project does not require professional installation.
Typically most of the work can be completed ahead of time in our shop so hours on site can be minimized, making for a more pleasant installation experience.
